John Muir referred to the Sierra Nevada as "the most beautiful of all the mountain chains" or, more poetically, "the range of light." The Desolation Wilderness contains 63,960 acres of subalpine and alpine forest, bald granite peaks, dramatic cliffs and glacially-formed valleys and more than 100 lakes. Located in the Crystal Range of the Sierra Nevada Mountains near Lake Tahoe, the Desolation Wilderness takes its name from the barren, rocky basins that characterize its heights. Our project for this trip is on the Rockbound Trail from Silver Creek to above Maud Lake. The work would involve clearing trails, installing and improving drainage structures, improving tread condition, and fixing problem areas. We’ll backpack about four miles where we’ll set up a basecamp, and work out of this base for the week. On our off day, we can explore the wilderness, swim, fish, or dayhike up to the pass for sweeping views. This trip is suitable for beginners to camping and trailwork.
